The "Peoples' Car" was meant to expand the pleasure and status of automotive accessibility to all people, and this morning the chairman of Tata Sons, one of India's two largest companies, unveiled the car at a Delhi auto show.
The Tata company, a regional car company based in India, faces a huge potential market of drivers within India's 1.1 billion population and throughout the subcontinent. Tata has set the price of the "Peoples' Car" at one lakh, (one hundred thousand) rupees, approximately $2500USD, and the car is marketed to people who are not yet middle class but who are able to afford this version and other versions of the car that Tata will be releasing.
The car itself is reported to receive about 50 miles to the gallon and features a two-cylinder 623 cc, rear-mounted engine with a top test speed of 105 kilometres (65 miles) an hour.
Automotive usage in India has risen steadily in the last few years, fueled by personal income growth and the addition of more women in the workplace. The Tata car would fit a very specific profile of a family or group of related people with jobs and who want the mobility of their own vehicle (instead of relying on the ubiquitous rickshaws or buses).
I'm curious to see how we all will cope with increasing oil prices (the barrel just topped $100 this week) and increased demand. A burgeoning Indian car market means even more consumers and increased need for barrels of oil (and we're not quite sure where that will come from).
