Increasing Diversity in your Business Practices (1 of 4)
I believe that everyone is a little bit prejudiced, but I don't think this is our biggest obstacle. Our biggest problem is when we act on incomplete information instead of increasing our knowledge. Here in the United States, diversity is one of our greatest strengths, but it only turns confusing and sour when our ignorance gets the better of us (a la "Asians are good at math" and other stereotypes).

We may have preconceived notions of how other people behave and think, but the more we educate ourselves and learn about other cultures, the more opportunities we have to increase and expand our business skills.

Who doesn't want to increase their customer base?
Who doesn't want to improve their management skill?
Who doesn't want a stronger workforce?

If you raised your hand, stop reading this article! In the U.S. and other countries with changing demographics, those with the quickest ability to be relevant will win.

I always maintain that a focus on the positive is the best way to effect change: keep that in mind when it comes to your own situation!

Top Ten Ideas for Integrating Diversity into your Company Culture

10) Replace one of the photos on your marketing materials with a person of color

9) As you grow your staff, make a specific effort to recruit women and minorities to apply

8) Expand your client base by networking in circles outside of your typical routine

7) Present at, host, sponsor, or join a group devoted to women of color in business

6) Check your Policies and Procedures and make sure you have systems in place to deal with potential misunderstandings

5) Do you offer your products/services in different flavors, colors, and styles? Make sure you have an option that "matches" what your potential customers want. Listen to customer feedback to take care of your existing base.

4) Get a women of color onto your board or advisory group

3) Develop a mentorship program for new staff: help build teams and "buddies" to retain your employees

2) Did you know that some cultures recognize a third gender, which is when a man or woman prefers to dress or act like the opposite sex? You might consider how to re-organize your personnel areas: perhaps adding a "unisex" bathroom or non-gendered changing area or lounge would work.

1) Make sure your management team represents different viewpoints and backgrounds: find unity within your diversity.
