Women of color in business, keep an eye out for the news coming from the 33rd annual G8 Summit. This affects you! The topics on the table include economic and social development, labor, trade, energy, health, law enforcement, environment, foreign affairs, justice and interior, and terrorism. The people discussing these topics, however, are doing so behind a 12 km fence, erected at a cost of $17 million, that circles the entire perimeter of the hotel.
See the Heiligendamm fence:
I'm thrilled that women are represented, like Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, this year's host. I believe women occupy a rightful 50% of any seats at any decisionmaking table. I'm also thrilled that up to 100,000 additional visitors are expected at this year's event to call attention to the fence and the summit. We need all these "people's representatives" who are coming to hold the G8 representatives accountable.
The G8 representatives are from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States; these countries make up 65% of the world's economic output and 14% of the world's population.
With these people of influence, we have the opportunity to call for a number of just and right actions for our children and our children's children, including equal rights for people worldwide, a transfer to renewable sources of energy, an immediate worldwide eradication of nuclear weapons, debt relief for nations in poverty, and a peaceful world with peaceful alternatives and peace-based solutions.
Five additional nations of the People's Republic of China, Mexico, India, Brazil, and South Africa, are represented at this year's event. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he's "going to take my little bio-diesel package to the G8," and points to the proof of his country, which relies mostly on hydraulic power and more and more biofuels, and has in the last few years reduced habitat destruction from 31,000 sq. kilometers per year to 14,000 sq kilometers per year.
With pro-future-Planet-Earth opportunities in place, our focus in the next decade naturally turns towards environmentally sustainable businesses, international cooperation, and the development of goods and services that benefit the planet and the human race.
My fellow businesswomen: that's the type of global business I look forward to experiencing.
