![]() His comments (documented at MediaMatters.org http://mediamatters.org/items/200704040011) which he tossed out just for fun, turned into big losses all around: for his post at the radio show, for his apartment, for his $10 million salary, for CBS, and for his reputation. In all fairness, as women in business we typically learn how to brush aside insensitive comments in favor of moving forward with our own agendas: minority women CEOs, minority women business owners, minority women in the boardroom and more economic and financial decision-making positions; however, this whole debacle shows us what to avoid when we're in a position of widespred public scrutiny. I'm sure all of us, when we look back on our history, remember at least one incident that was damaging and hurtful. In that case, I recommend you breathe out that pain, forgive the person who called you names, and move past it, knowing that "living well is the best revenge." Nothing anyone says will "stick" to you when you're clear about your purpose and values. As Eleanor Roosevelt says, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. Most probably, in today's digital age, the next time someone says something hurtful, denigrating, insensitive, etc.... they'll get caught on YouTube.com and public disdain will take care of them. So, for those of you who think these kinds of thoughts, I highly recommend you replace them with better messages of unity, sharing, and equal opportunity!! |
