International Women's Day is focused on celebrating the successes of women over the years, and this year's activities include festivals, seminars, teach-ins, and celebrations around the world.
In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating March 8th as International Women's Day, and in December 1977 the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace to be observed by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions.
The UN General Assembly cited two reasons to celebrate Internation Women's Day:
1) to recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women; and
2) to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.
For all women, the day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate, to look at how far we have come in terms of equality, peace, and development, as well as an opportunity, as the UN states, to "unite, network and mobilize for meaningful change."
I encourage you to celebrate International Women's Day with the women in your office or at your workplace.

In Russia this holiday is a national occaision. But it is mostly an opportunity for men to show appriciation to the special women in their lives.
