In the Philippines
For the last week we have been on a buying trip in the Philippines, searching for not only new talent but also products that we may be able to resell in the United States for a markup.

Quite a few things to think about!

For one thing, the cost of living here is extremely affordable, if you are earning US dollars. For example, the monthly salary at a white-collar job is around $320-$400US, with housing between $100-$150US per month. You can eat (well) for less than $5 a day.

beach.jpgWe've been visiting Bohol, a wonderful island with plenty of land available as well as many ecotourism opportunities (live starfish, white sand beaches, rides down the Loboc river, waterfalls, basketmaking and other handicrafts, and great dining); we've also spent some time in Baguio and Metro Manila.

The main developments here have been real estate (with beautiful, custom-built condos ranging from $28k-$100k), call centers (Dell just opened up a huge call center this month), and of course, the trend of exporting labor (Overseas Filipino Workers) in nursing, cruise lines, caregiving, and housekeeping. OFW's remit almost $16 billion back to the Philippines every year.

The Philippines is competing with India to become a call center hub, promoting the large English-speaking workforce here, the reduced cost of labor, and the infrastructure stability. Of course, there are many more Indians (around 1 billion) than Filipinos (around 80 million), so it remains to be seen what will happen in that arena.
nipa.jpgThere is a large and growing number of expatriates who are choosing to settle here. For example, in Bohol, there is an association of foreigners that now numbers 2000+: many of these are from Germany, Australia, and the US. In Cebu, the city has been actively promoting to retirees from the US: if you want to buy a nice house and lot, with a maid, driver, and all the amenities you could ever desire (and beach access!), you can do so for around $1000US per month.

ontheriver.jpgOf course, you also have to put up with the disadvantages of living in a developing country, but for some of you, that might be a small cost to the benefit of living like royalty.

Many Filipino Americans, or Filipino Canadians, or others who have settled in Europe, choose to return "home" when they retire. It's a good life and if you have family and friends here, you truly can live well.

Yea, real affordable to live here as a foreigner until some idiot targets you for extortion. Thinking of filing a complaint at the local barangay, or police station? Guess who they will side with? Definitely not the foreigner. The Philippines is a racist country suffering from a terminal inferiority complex. Can't wait to finish up our court cases & leave this hopeless piss-pot of a country...after 9 years of putting up with the endless scams Filipinos attempt to pull on you daily. Will make it a point to treat Filipinos in America in exactly the same manner that my family & I have been treated by Filipinos here in the Philippines. We now know who the "True Racist" really are...

Philippines is a very racist country, they are racist to dark skinned people. If you live in the phillipines it's hard to find job if you not the "right type", the reason why people go else where to find jobs.it's a shame.

I hope phillipine will learned to give everyone a chance and not judge too harshly by appearances. Filipinos belived the lighter the better. Even if the person is homely as long as the person is half white or just simply fair skinned, that person is the most beautiful thing they ever seen. Filipons in the phillipnes strived hard to get light (hence the bleaching soaps and lotions commercials) No matter how pretty you are if your dark skinned, it's too bad in their eyes your ugly.

Very ignorant!! Sorry, but true

The housing is growing a lot in that country and that is a good thing since industry can develop a lot this way. I think I have seen a business company in Milan furniture show this year that was from Philippines. It seems that they are getting over their own borders in this business and they had a lot to offer.

well, philippines is such a nice place and not all Filipinos are ignorant for they also have education there. i guess u are more judgmental if ul say that all filipino do so.

Of course there's nothing more pleasant like being home with your family and friends, even though the quality of life isn't that wonderful.I wouldn't leave my country! What is more, you can have problems anywhere,so why not trying to solve them with your friends and family beside you?
