Racist comments = Bad for Business
Have you heard of Adam Carolla? You should. news His case is a classic case of how to lose goodwill within a particular ethnic community. On last month's radio show he produced and aired a two-minute segment mocking participants in an Asian Pacific American award ceremony (the segment had voices repeating "Ching chong, ching chong" 42 times).

Now, he and CBS Radio have drawn the ire of venerable organizations like Asianweek, the Organization of Chinese Americans, and other organized APA groups. If there's a boycott of the station and advertisers, we're talking about  a loss from a group with approximately $300 billion in consumer purchasing power: Asians and Asian Americans possess the highest income figures within ethnic minorities, and APAs are increasing (projected to 18 million by 2020).

I wouldn't want to lose out on that type of business, would you?

I wouldn't want to lose out on any type of business due to my ignorance or inability to communicate across cultural lines. Merchants, advertisers, and retailers be advised: culturally appropriate marketing, as well as hiring, retaining, and promoting people of color within your organization, will give you a better bottom line in the long run.

Thanks to Know More Media, our publisher, for being on the cutting edge of media and providing such a terrific forum for many different voices!

Thanks for the kind words Monica.

We think that this is one of the great powers of the new media - we can shine a bright spotlight on those who used to hide in obscurity, with their bigotry, racism, sexism, and vile practices.

We will be announcing soon the addition of some international authors, including one from Asia. We look forward to learning from them.

Great. Good for Know More Media. I'm so pleased to be a part of this team of writers simply because of the open nature, the citizen activism, and our ability to talk about what really makes a difference to us ;-)
